Reflect on Course 3

How can you incorporate aspects of vitual literacy into your lesson?

After attending the course I start to think that vitual literacy is a new way of writing that combine powerful image, wording and sound together in order to impact the reader's mind and understanding. Therefore with so many components in creating one vitual literacy for a lesson would certain require so many skills not only technology skills. With this in mind, I think I need time to design, time to search for the appropriate images and music in order to relay my message or lesson to students. If I can do this, I am certain that my lesson will have a great impact on students' memory as well as their understanding.

At the moment I have been using video clip from Thai television to explain hard concept, like, Thai Baht value, 3G problem in Thailand and Thai politics. From my lesson, I can see at least that student has been motivated with the video and some can remember the vocabulary or Thai expression that they never heard before from the video-clip. My concept is very simple. I use video clip as the language input for content and vocabulary. Then students have time to process the information they have watched and discussed the key issues together. In the end, student would put down in writing as a summary or bullet point as their final output during the class time. All these learning process will at least provide students with concept idea associated with the target vocabularies. This is one of my technique in improving my Thai students' real life vocabularies. One major thing that I have to keep in mind is that I have to focus on the meaning and concept of the vocabulary and how it is used in everyday life. Video clip is just a technology tools that will make students more engaged in learning.

The next step I am planning to do for my Thai lesson is to create a digital story as a summary tools for what students learned in each unit. According to the book "Make me a story" the writer suggested that there are seven elements in crafting a digital story; an interesting question to answer, impact, a clear point of view, economy, the power of student's voice, art that helps tell the story and the sound track. I think I have to create a rubric as a guideline for students to follow so that they can manage to create an interesting digital story. This is my idea that I hope will improve learning for my Thai students.
