The more I read and learn about what is going on line, it makes me feel like people do not realize how important it is to know what the floating information on line can harm, benefit, and exploit the society. Who's responsibility is it to teach students to be safe online? It might be from both parents and teachers at school. School should not only teach students it should at the same time create this awareness to parents too.
Where does the power of the Web lie? It is so powerful as you can see the situation in Bangkok with the "Red Shirt" crisis. Social network are growing so fast among Thai people and they are using twitter, facebook to inform people in the society what is going on. Many big news start from the discussion board in Pantip and Sanook. Questionable pictures and videoclip are shown to testify and explain the situation. It is no doubt using social media on your personal issue might not be a good idea and could create problem to your life. Students should be aware of how to receive the information as well as the way they post their ideas and their personal life on any social network web-site.
In the school curriculum ISB does cover the issue about the power of the internet world and copyright issues. However, for teaching, teacher should try to give the real world situation so that students can understand and realize about the consequence.
I agree the crisis here in Thailand I think brought to light ways both good and bad on how these social tools can and are being used. Twitter was fascinating to watch. I wrote a blog post on my experience with it during the crisis as well.
